Drivers: Jacky Ickx, Jackie Oliver

After the retirement, with three hours remaining, two cars were running neck and neck: the Porsche 908 of Herrmann/Larrousse and the Ford GT40 of Ickx/Oliver. Following the final pit stop for both cars, one of the most thrilling Le Mans finales in history unfolded, comparable only to the duel of 1933, when Tazio Nuvolari and Luigi Chinetti battled for victory, and the close finish of the 2011 race. The 908 was faster than the GT40 on the straights, while the GT40 had the advantage in the twisty sections. Almost every lap saw the same scenario: Hans Herrmann overtook the Ford on the long straight before the Mulsanne Straight, and Jacky Ickx countered in the corners before the start/finish line. When, shortly before 2 p.m., Ickx outbraked the Porsche before the Ford Chicane, the race seemed decided. But Charles Deutsch signaled to the two drivers at the finish line with a raised finger that there was still one more lap to go, as the full 24-hour distance had not yet been reached. While the cars behind the two leaders were already being flagged off, Ickx and Herrmann drove down the Hunaudières straight once more. This time, the Porsche driver was unable to overtake Ickx, who managed to hold onto a 100-meter lead to the finish.
